Great article. Amazing insights. Perhaps the greatest lesson for me is one on action. Unless you are willing to take action and go to the river, nothing else matters.

Might one call this "a new angle" on fishing? Sorry...couldn't resist :)

But seriously, this is a great analogy, in my opinion. You've truly thought outside the box of this ageless metaphor, and enhanced it in a way that adds profound and valuable meaning to the concept that so many of us hear and almost immediately dismiss...simply because we've "heard it all before," and retain our "yeah, yeah...I get it" sort of attitudes. This new concept should cause people to think in a new way about the "fishing" lesson, and how it applies to their current and future situations.

Another concept might be to go beyond just teaching someone to fish, or fishing for them, toward fishing WITH them. Thus, it shows how mentorship/coaching can be a supplemental and ongoing developmental variation on this same theme. Not only do you help them do it themselves, but you also help them continue to get better and better at it (e.g. perhaps to the point where THEY become proficient enough to teach others themselves).

Even further outside the box, we may want to introduce the ideas of teaching a man how to hunt (in case they start getting sick of sushi all the time), how to cook (seafood rather than sushi), how to farm (we need a balanced diet, yes?), and how to distill (red or white?). You see, Dennis...you've set the wheels in motion again!! Thanks ;)

Comment on For Innovators, It’s The Un-Serenity Prayer by David B. Harb

I just learned of your blog today. My first read was your blog about serenity. Upon reading it a second time, I am convinced that you may have this notion upside down. Before writing this, I went to the dictionary for "serene" and "courage". My thoughts were reinforced.
Courage, Dennis, almost by definition, seems to require absolute serenity. Consider the courage of a Medal of Honor recipient, the courage of the inventor (Bell), or the courage of the perfector (Jobs). Who in the world could ever believe that those men or women could ever have, in that first instant, begun to act, or in their untiring continuation proceeded to act, without absolute peace and serenity that what they had set out to do was right, or cool, or great? How serene were you when you first decided to begin your blog?

Nothing great has ever been done by a committee. It has always been that one special person. It then occurs to one that such greatness only comes with great and unwavering serenity. That's why it's so important in our lives to find it.
